*Umwelts are how we experience the world through our type. We are all familiar with the functions of type (Thinking, Feeling, Sensing, and iNtuition), but Jung said that the core to understanding type was in how the dominant and auxiliary functions work together, which he called the Function Couplings. Umwelts is the term used by the late Humphrey Osmond is describing the eight possible Function Couplings:
TS: Thinking-sensation, TN: Thinking-intuitive
FS: Feeling-sensation, FN: Feeling-intuitive
ST: Sensation-thinking, SF: Sensation-feeling
NT: Intuitive-thinking, and NF: Intuitive-feeling.
While functions tell us what a person experiences in the world—thoughts, feelings, sensations, intuitions–Umwelts or Function Couplings tell us how the person experiences the world.
Based on the work of Jungian Analyst John Giannini author of “Compass of the Soul” (CAPT) and Humphrey Osmond, Miriam Siegler, and Richard Smoke authors of “Typology Revisited: A New Perspective,” (Psychological Perspectives: A Quarterly Journal of Jungian Thought vol 8:2) this interactive workshop will show you how to trace your life development through the lens of type, specifically through the Umwelts/Function Couplings.
What you will be able to do by the end of the workshop:
1. Identify the characteristics of each of the Umwelts/Function Couplings.
2. Trace how the Umwelts/Function Couplings develop over the span of your life for your own particular type.
3. Make a visual chart your own type development.
Handouts will include descriptions of Umwelts/Function Couplings and blank charts to record your own type development.
Who should attend: anyone interested is seeing how type develops throughout your life.
Attention Psychologists/Teachers/Graduate Students: The material presented in this workshop could be used as the basis for further research.
