Have you even been put into a double bind where someone gives you two conflicting messages that negate each other? Or have you ever had to resort to playing tricks in order to overcome impediments to your goals. Leadership takes us into encounters with the TRICKSTER, the function that puts us in double binds or helps us to circumvent obstacles. The best leaders learn to access their Trickster defense to protect themselves and their organizations.
We can be blindsided when we rely too much on our strengths or preferred functions. We tend to be unaware of our own tendencies to manipulate. This unconsciousness creates a dangerous blind spot, one that leaves us open to deception by others and by ourselves. Paradoxically, by learning to recognize our own manipulative capabilities, we can access one of our most helpful defenses—the Trickster—without being disempowered by defensiveness. The Beebe model, developed by Jungian Analyst, John Beebe, MD, helps us identify this aspect of our Shadow by associating Trickster energy with the seventh function. If undeveloped, the Trickster function can lead us to sabotage ourselves, or leave us open to double binds. However, the Trickster function can also help us find creative solutions that enable us to stay in the game.
We will experiment with a playful exercise that emphasizes the gamesmanship of the Trickster. We will also examine an actual case where one CEO was ensnared by tricksters. We will try to find our own ways to escape his impossible bind, before learning how he successfully mustered his seventh or Trickster function in defense.
